cornice recuperata - upcycled picture frame

l’estate scorso mia figlia ha trovato una di quelle lavagne magnetiche nella stanzetta di mio nipote. si era bloccato il pezzo che si fa salire e scendere per cancellare il disegno fatto. sono riuscita a sbloccarlo, più o meno, in modo che si poteva di nuovo usarla, quindi mio nipote l’ha dato a noi.

last summer while fishing around in my nephew’s toys, my daughter found one of those magnetic doodler things. the part that goes up and down to erase the picture was blocked. i managed to unblock it so it could be used again, so my nephew gave it to us. 

 
poi, qualche settimana dopo, si è bloccato definitivamente.
come si sa, non mi piace buttare mai niente. quindi l’ho smontata.

then, a few weeks later, it blocked up again, but this time for good.

as everyone already knows, i don’t like to throw anything away. so i took it apart.

 

 
ho tagliato un rettangolo da un foglio trasparente per le lavagne luminose e l’ho attaccato su tre lati sulla parte magnetica con lo scotch in modo di formare una specie di busta.

i cut a rectangle from an overhead projector transparency and taped it on three sides to the top of the flat magnetic part so that it made a sort of envelope.

…e appesa alla parete come cornice! questa lavagna aveva già un foro sul retro per appenderla, quindi è stata molto semplice. l’unico problema qui è stato che non ho pensato prima che avrei dovuto tagliare la foto per farla entrare, quindi non l’ho fatto stampare nella dimensione giusta, quindi la foto è da ristampare. ma per il resto mi sembra una cornice molto sfiziosa! e gratis!

…and onto the wall as a picture frame! this doodler already had a hole on the back for hanging, so it was really easy. the only problem was that i didn’t think beforehand that i would need to cut the photo to fit it inside, so i didn’t get it printed large enough. but that can obviously be taken care of easily. besides that, i think it’s a pretty nifty little frame! and free!

cucicucicoo compie 1 anno! festeggiamo tutti! - cucicucicoo turns 1! let’s celebrate!

mi sembra ieri ma anche tanti anni fa che ho iniziato questa avventura del blog. invece è stato esattamente un anno fa oggi! auguri cucicucicoo! nel corso di questo anno ho festeggiato anche gli altri blog con i loro candy, quindi ho deciso anch’io di regalare qualcosa a tre dei miei amici blogghisti (o non-blogghisti) per festeggiare!

it feels like just yesterday but at the same time years ago that i started this blog adventure. but it was actually exactly one year ago today! happy birthday, cucicucicoo! during this year i’ve celebrated other blogs with their blog candies, so i decided to have one too and give something to three of my blog (or non-blog) friends to celebrate! 
   
per il primo vincitore quella qualcosa sarà un set di 6 sottobicchieri fatti con il foglio lavagna. è un tessuto su cui si scrive con i gessi, come una lavagna normale. poi si cancella tutto con un panno e si può pulire ancora meglio con un panno umido.

that something for the first place winner will be a set of 6 coasters made with chalk cloth. this type of cloth can be written on with chalk, just like a normal chalkboard. then you erase it with a cloth or you can clean it even better with a damp cloth.  

ci si può scrivere il nome di ogni ospite in modo che non si confondono i bicchieri, o semplicemente disegnarci sopra quello che vuoi.

you can write every guest’s name on them so you don’t get your glasses all mixed up, or just draw/write whatever you want on them.

poi qualcosa che sicuramente serve a tutti quanti in questo periodo: i fazzoletti lavabili. qui c’è un set di 4 fazzoletti (25 x 25 cm) fatti da una flanella di cotone morbidissimo, perfetto per tutti i nostri poveri nasi rossi. ho scelto una fantasia con ciliegie per farci sognare i colori e sapori dell’estate. (ma se le ciliegie non ispirano tanto al vincitore, ho anche altre fantasie da cui scegliere)
ecco il tutto, pronto per essere usato con tanto amore!

then something that i know all of us need these cold wet days: cloth handkerchiefs. this is a set of 4 hankies (25 x 25 cm) made from super soft cotton flannel, super gentle on our poor red noses. i chose a cherry pattern to remind us of the colors and flavors of summer. (but if cherries don’t float the winner’s boat, i have other patterns that he/she can choose from)

grazie mille beta! e 3 candy! - thanks so much beta! and 3 blog candies!

io ho avuto la grande fortuna di vincere il secondo premio nel blog candy di bim bum beta il mese scorso! la prima vincitrice ha vinto una porta-tutto molto carina, e noi vincitrici dei secondo e terzo premi avremmo ricevuto delle sorprese. e che sorpresa mi è arrivata stamattina!

i was lucky enough to have won  second place in bim beta bum’s blog candy last month! the first prize winner won a very cute carry-everything-you-can-imagine and we second and third placers were promised a nice surprise. and what a nice surprise i received this morning!   

un portauncinetti fatto di pelle e stoffa! i colori sono molto belli insieme ed è fatto benissimo. due bottoni fatti con la stoffa(con il metodo usato da elena fiore, l’ho chiesto a beta) lo tengono chiuso. all’interno ci sono i compartimenti per gli uncinetti. si chiude l’interno con il velcro. tutto impacchettato in modo molto bello e con un biglietto dalla carinissima beta. ti ringrazio tantissimo!!!! e a tutti voi che leggete, vi consiglio di andare subito dal suo blog se non lo conosci già, perché è una fonte di idee molto belle, per non parlare delle sue parole sempre belle!

a crochet needle carrier made of leather and fabric! the colors are very pretty together and it’s all put together so nicely. two cloth covered buttons (made with elena fiore’s method, i asked beta) keep it closed. on the inside there are slots for the needles. and the inner pocket closes with velcro. it came packages so nicely and with a very sweet card. thank you so much, beta!!! and anyway who reads italian, i suggest you go straight to her blog if you don’t already know it, because it’s full of great ideas and lovely words!

non voglio comprare i regali!! - i don’t want to buy any more gifts!

nonostante stavo male nel periodo natalizio, ho cercato di fare la maggior parte dei regali a mano. mi sono scocciata di comprare le cose nei negozi. perché dobbiamo essere per forza consumeristici? basta!
prima ho fatto un asciugamano con il cappuccio a forma di coniglio per mia figlia. l’avevo iniziato tanti mesi fa (doveva essere un regalo di pasqua) e poi è rimasto là in pezzi per tanto tempo. ho copiato un asciugamano a forma di rana di l.l.bean che mia madre le aveva regalato un paio di anni fa. è un rettangolo di spugna di cotone con delle zampette agli angoli e un cappuccio con orecchie lunghe, un nasino e due bottoni per occhi.

even though i was sick in the holiday period, i tried to make as many gifts as possible by hand. i’m sick of buying stuff in stores. do we really have to be such consumers? enough is enough!

first of all i made a hooded bunny towel for my little girl. it actually was supposed to be an easter gift (i started it months and months ago) and then it ended up laying around in pieces all this time. i copied an l.l.bean frog hooded towel that my mother had given to her a couple of years ago. it’s a rectangle of terry cloth with paws at the corners and a hood with long ears, a little nose and button eyes.

 
ho anche fatto dei cuscini con 100% materiali recuperati (qui c’è un tutorial). quello a destra era una camicia di mio marito in buone condizioni a parte il collare distrutta. era un peccato buttarla via. quello a sinistra invece era un pile molto consumato, ma molto amato, di mio marito. l’ho fatto per qualcun altro, ma quando era finito mi sono resa conto che era veramente un po’ troppo consumato, quindi l’abbiamo tenuto per noi. e ho scoperto che il pile fa una fodera meravigliosa per un cuscino! mi piace un sacco abbracciarlo…mi sembra di abbracciare mio marito!

i also made some pillows with 100% upcycled materials (there’s a tutorial here). the one on the right was my husband’s shirt which was still in great condition except for a destroyed collar. it was a shame to just throw it away. the one on the left was a very used (and loved) fleece sweater of my husband’s. i actually made it for someone else, but i realized when it was done that it was a bit too used to give away, so we kept it for ourselves. and i found out that fleece makes a wonderful pillow cover! i love to hug it…it feels like i’m hugging my hubby!

i cuscini all’interno sono fatti di magliette vecchie riempiti di pezzetti di stoffa rimasta dai miei lavori.  questo qui mi fa morire dalle risate, mi sembra il tronco di mio marito, con la sua maglietta dentro il suo pile! poi ho fatto i pantaloni per la notte per mia figlia dalle maniche del pile, ma dovrò scrivere di quella avventura un altro giorno.

the inner pillows are made of old tshirts filled with scraps of fabric left over from my sewing adventures. this one cracks me up, it looks like my husband’s chest, with his t-shirt inside his fleece! then i also made pajama pants for my daughter from the fleece sleeves, but i’ll have to write about that adventure another day.

visto che stavo male, ho fatto tutto in grande fretta e purtroppo non sono riuscita a fare le foto di tutti i regali prima di consegnarli. ad esempio, ho fatto una montagna di presine con 100% materiali recuperati (jeans consumati e una vestitino di mia suocera) per un paio di parenti e per le tre maestre di mia figlia. mia cognata e mia suocera hanno riconosciuto la stoffa del vestitino subito e hanno fatto un sacco di risate. ho usato il tutorial che ho fatto diversi mesi fa, perché non mi ricordavo delle dimensioni da usare, e mi sono reso conto di essermi sbagliata quando l’avevo scritto, quindi l’ho corretto. spero che nessuno l’abbia provato come l’avevo scritto…scusatemi!

seeing as i was sick, i did everything really rushed and i wasn’t able to take pictures of everything before giving them away. for example, i made a whole bunch of 100% upcycled potholders (old jeans and my mother-in-law’s old dress) for a couple of relatives and my daughter’s three teachers. my sister- and mother-in-law recognized the dress material right away and had a good laugh at it. i used the tutorial that i wrote quite a few months back because i couldn’t remember what dimensions to use, and… whoops! i realized that i’d written them down wrong! i corrected it in the original post, but i hope that nobody actually did it as i wrote it…sorry about that! :)

auguri! calze della befana - happy holidays! befana stockings

auguri a tutti! non solo per epifania, ma anche per l’anno nuovo. non ho potuto scrivere niente dalla vigilia di natale perché ho avuto la tracheite, che ha comportato che mi è venuta la febbre quattro volte in meno di un mese, una tosse terrificante e una stanchezza e una debolezza molto scoccianti. finalmente mi sono curata con un bel cocktail di medicine ed eccomi di nuovo qua!

best wishes to all of you out there! as anyone at all catholic (or living in a catholic community) knows, today is epiphany. i know i missed sending out new year’s wishes, but i hadn’t been able to write anything because i had tracheitis, which caused me to get a fever 4 times in less than a month and a terrible cough, in addition to being incredibly tired and weak. i finally got put on a horrible cocktail of medications, and there i am again!

visto che non sono stata tanto bene di recente, ho il cervello che sta funzionando ancora un po’ lentamente e confesso di essermi completamente dimenticata di preparare le calze per i miei nipoti.oops!

so, today is ephiphany. as tradition has it in italy (or at least southern italy), a witch called “la befana” comes to kids’ houses the night before, santa claus-style, and leaves gifts and stockings with all sorts of goodies. but adults also prepare stockings with candy and whatnot for kids that aren’t their own (or even adults). seeing as i haven’t been quite up to par recently and my brain is still a bit on the slow side, i knew that my husband had taken charge of our own family’s befana business, but i confess that i totally forgot about our niece and nephew. whoops….

quindi quando mi sono ricordata stamattina, mi sono messa a fare in grande fretta le calze di carta come ha fatto alessia di alessia, scrap & craft. anche l’anno scorso ho fatto calze di carta, ma fissando i due lati con la spillatrice, che non è stato un metodo nè molto efficiente nè molto bello esteticamente. alessia, invece, ha usato la carta del pane e l’ha cucito. non c’avevo mai pensato, di cucire la carta. geniale! (infatti, sembra che non sono stata l’unica a pensare che si tratassi di un’idea meravigliosa; alessia ha appena aggiunto un post sul blog di altri siti che parlano dell’idea sua.)
 

so when i remembered this morning, i quickly made up paper stockings as alessia from alessia, scrap & craft did. i also made paper stockings last year, but the edges were held together by staples, which wasn’t the most efficient (or aesthetically pleasing) way to do it. alessia, on the other hand, use the paper that fresh loaves of bread are sold in here in italy and sewed it together. pure genius! (and as it seems i wasn’t the only one to think so; alessia just put up a new post with links to other sites writing about her idea.) 

invece della carta del pane, ho usato una busta per le spese di carta. ho messo le due parti insieme con gli spilli e ho cucito a zig zag. non ho aggiunto il cerchietto per appendere per pigrizia (e perché andavo di frettissima!). poi ci ho fatto disegnare sopra mia figlia. e le ho riempite con dei biscotti tipici degli stati uniti fatti in casa con la melassa (messi prima in una busta di plastica riutilizzata).

instead of using bread paper, i used a paper bag. i pinned the two parts together and sewed it with a zig zag stitch. i didn’t put the loop to hang the stockings because i was lazy (and incredibly rushed!). then i had my daughter draw on them and i filled them with homemade molasses cookies (after packing them up in re-used plastic bags).  

ho messo veramente pochissimo tempo e il risultato è stato molto soddisfacente, non solo a me, ma anche ai ragazzi! grazie, alessia, sei una fonte di idee meravigliose!!

it really took very little time to make these stockings up and the end result was quite satisfying, not only for me, but also for the kids! thanks, alessia, you’re always full of great ideas!!
